Storm King in the Fall

10/11/11

It was the perfect Fall weekend so I took a trip to the Storm KIng Art Center in the Hudson Valley. It’s always been a favorite place of mine – the juxtaposition of monumental sculpture and a stunning landscape is just magical. This weekend with the leaves just starting to turn was even better than usual and I came away feeling very inspired.

I’ll let the photos do the talking except to say the Andy Goldsworthy wall is still my favorite piece.

Moveable Type

09/16/10

One of the coolest features of the New York Times building lobby is the permanent art installation, titled “Movable Type”. Imagine you are walking through a brightly painted hall lined with a grid of 560 small digital screens. As you walk, you hear a subtle (digital) hum as you see words come an go on small electronic screens. The words derive from algorithms which parse both realtime and archived data from the New York Times. Click here for a video introduction to the piece.

Inspiring prints from Picasso

08/09/10

I went up to MoMA on Friday (thank you Target for your Friday free nights) and saw an exhibition of Picasso’s prints. A lot of the work was really great (as you’d expect) but one series stood out for me and that was the Bull series from the mid 1940’s. Over a series of 11 lithographs (not all on display) he progresses from a realistic depiction of a Bull to a abstracted schematic representation which was just poetic in it’s simplicity (see last photo above). It seemed to me a metaphor for how we try and get to the essence of a design through our development process. The photo’s above show 4 stages in the series but the entire 11 prints can be seen here.

The exhibition runs through August 30th and I’d highly recommend it.

Fresh Art

07/15/10

Just spotted on the corner of 8th Avenue & 38th street – painted straight onto the construction hoarding.

Here’s a link to the artist’s website.

Dean Project – new show opening

05/25/10

Another thing I spotted in Long Island City this weekend was these funky mop sculptures by Hyungsub Shin on the wall at the Dean Project Gallery. It seems like they have a new show opening this weekend (opening party is Sat 29th, 6-9pm). Unfortunately they weren’t open so I couldn’t find out any more information than is shown on their website here.

The mops looked great though so I’ll probably try to get down and check it out soon.

Super Distressed Graphics

05/24/10

Saw this sign this weekend on my way home from the Greater New York show at PS1 in Long Island City this weekend. I loved the fact that they just stuck a new set of letters over the top of the ones that were peeling off – it was like some crazy, distressed drop shadow. I wish there was an Illustrator filter that could create that effect.

I have to say the show didn’t really wow me but the new installation in the schoolyard looks like it’s going to be fun. No sign of any chickens though.
